How to Make an Envelope from a square Instagram Photo!

One of my lovely super creative friends mentioned to me she wanted to be a pen pal.
"Let's send each other art!" she said.
"Hooray!" I replied. "We'll be pen art pals!"

And I set out trying to figure out how to turn my Instagram photos
into an envelope/letter for my first project. It's pretty on one side and blank on the other!
Fold it up and voila!

To note, I am sure there is probably a whole lot easier way to make this,
but this is just my clunky ol' way and style. :) Enjoy!

You'll need:
  • Double-sided tape
  • Your favorite Instagram photo printed on an 8.5x11 piece of paper*
  • Sharp scissors
  • Bone Folder (just a flat piece of plastic we'll use with the score board!)
  • Score board (<--we're not talking about sports, fyi! You'll find this at your local craft store!  It puts creases in the paper so we can fold it easily! I'll show you a photo below! If you're half as crafty as me, it's worth buying!

*PAPER: I use a paper called teton. It feels much like watercolor paper, slightly textured and close to a cover stock. You could probably use copy paper and it would still mail!
I just like something that's heavier, with a bit more weight! Go to your local paper store
and just feel the different weights and textures of paper and experiment!

NOTE: Practice creating this first on a scrap piece of paper if the paper you are working with is expensive! I inevitably end up scoring the wrong side or cutting something too short before I get it just
how I want it!

1. First, print your square Instagram photo on an 8.5x11 piece of paper.
Essentially, we're going to cut it down to 8.5x8.5 inches.

I used a score board and scissors to act as a razor blade down the lines of the score board.

2. Measure the final product to make sure you have a 8.5 x 8.5 piece of paper.

3. Now you're going to score or put indents in the paper so it folds easily on the creases we make!
My handy Martha Stewart score board already tells me that if I have an 8.5 x 8.5 piece of paper,
I am going to score at 3 inches and 3 5/8 inches. See the little diagram on the left?

So I put in the little triangle insert, slide the paper diagonally on the board,
and carefully press the bone folder down into the 3" crease of the board.

Here is what it should look like when you're done folding all 4 of the creases we just made!

4. Now it's time to write a cute little note in the middle.
5. Next, clip out the triangle corners so it folds more easily.

6. Fold it up and use a couple of small pieces of double sided tape to adhere the top down!

You could even put a cute sticker there if you wanted!

If you make this, you MUST post a blog on it and put a link in the comments so I can peek at it!
I love seeing how other people create art and letters! It's inspiring. :)
Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend, Lovelies!

PS: Special thanks to the incredible breakfast shared with Margaret one Tuesday morning
at Hillside Farmacy, off E 11th street, when this photo was taken.
What a delightful americano! Thank you!

thank you so much for sharing this idea. I love it simply because I have a few pen-pals and since I'm not very crafty, this seems like the perfect little project that I might attempt one day!

btw: I found your blog via instagram (I follow you on there. I'm beautyallaround)

and I love the simplicity of your blog, very soothing and interesting
