The Arrival of the Birds | Why We Make Art

I've a very dear friend who is going through a lot of crap right now.

"But it's all for the best" she says. I wonder if I was in her shoes if I could say the
same and honestly believe it? Thank God for friends, real comforts in this world
that are there through thick and thin, who encourage and inspire us.
Thank God for art...
To remind us of who we are.

I can't tell you how many times I've failed to create something, to write something
because I hear "Somebody already made that... It's not worth creating again!"
"Put that pen down! They won't get past the first line of your words anyway!"
"You won't be able to convey what you're feeling so just stop right now."
"It's already been done before!"
"They won't care!"
and on and on...

But if you stop and think about it, the things that have meant anything to us at all-
the book the friend gave us at just the perfect moment in our lives, the quote we
read on that bumper sticker that inspired us to simply DO, the movie we saw or
rather that one single line in the movie that stuck with us for years and helped us
to reach our goal- all of that was because ONE person decided to follow their heart
and do
their
art.

My friend Kristen reminded me of that last week. "Remember?" she said. I had forgotten.
It is why we make art.

If I could stop one heart from aching, Emily Dickinson says,
I shall not live in vain.
